Modality Theory: Supporting Multimodal Interface Design

چکیده

Modality theory addresses the following general problem of mapping task domain information into interactive multimodal interfaces: given any particular set of information which needs to be exchanged between user and system during task performance in context, identify the input/output modalities which constitute an optimal solution to the representation and exchange of that information. This paper proposes a research agenda for modality theory and presents two steps towards its implementation. The first is a generative taxonomy of output modalities covering the media of graphics, sound and touch. The second is a methodology for carrying out information-mapping in design practice. It is argued that modality theory may provide useful support to contemporary designers of interactive humancomputer interfaces who have begun to use a rapidly increasing number of different, and often alternative input/output modalities for the expression and exchange of information between systems and their users.

This paper presents the layout and functionality of Version 2 of the Taxonomy Workbench and Theory Demonstrator which is being developed at the Centre for Cognitive Science. The Theory Demonstrator uses multimedia/multimodal hypertext to present the taxonomy of unimodal output modalities which has been developed as part of addressing the research agenda of Modality Theory. The Workbench functio...

Modality Theory in Support of Multimodal Interface Design

Interactive advice on the use of speech in multimodal system design with SMALTO

With the recent spread of speech technologies and the increasing availability of application program interfaces for speech synthesis and recognition, system designers are starting to consider whether to add speech functionality to their applications. The questions that ensue are by no means trivial. SMALTO, the tool described below provides advice on the use of speech input and/or output modali...

Decoupling of Modality Integration and Interaction Design for Multimodal Human-Robot Interfaces

The development of a multimodal Human-Robot Interface (HRI) involving mixed-initiative and context-awareness is complex and laborious. The integration of individual modalities (e.g., gesture recognition or speech output) and the design of natural human-robot interaction are two different tasks that both require their own expertise. In this paper, we consider three different roles that participa...

Towards a tool for predicting speech functionality

In these days of multimodal systems and interfaces, many research teams are investigating the purposes for which novel combinations of modalities can be used. It is easy to forget that we still lack solid foundations for evaluating the functionality of individual families of input/output modalities, such as the speech modalities. The reason why these foundations are missing is the complexity of...
